Any show that has been on as long as the Simpsons will begin to run out of ideas.

Well, I'd have to say it's due to three reasons :
1) It's on a Sunday evening - being a semi-religious day of the week, it has to be somewhat clean.
2) Now that another season has been made, it's been so long since they had fresh ideas, they're at a loss on what to do.
3) They probably have different staff on the ideas team, which means that while the original staff from the first few seasons did ok, this new batch might not be so hot.

The Simpsons hasn't changed humor rating. It's still as funny as it ever was; however, the reason it doesn't seem as funny is because of all the other shows that have taken comedy to a higher level. Family Guy, American Dad, etc. are a bit more riské when it comes to their comedy, and the majority of viewers like that a lot more these days. So, it's not that it's not as funny as it use to be, it's the fact that it's simple humor is overshadowed by hilarious, random bits from other shows.

I think people change over time. I imagine u were in a different place in your life when the show first started, more carefree, no worries about college or jobs or relationships, and it was funnier to u for that reason. Now u have had some challenges and you have fewer friends around to anchor the show to fun.

They are milking a very elderly cow.
No show can stay on top forever, I love the old Simpsons but when I see it now it is a shadow of it's former self.

because they are running out of ideas....it's been on like 15 years. that's a long time!
