That's an unknown. Science has shown us the laws of physics that govern the universe and these laws are the same everywhere in most cases. The reason for those laws is unknown. Why did God say E=mc^2 or F=ma? Who knows why? Newton did not. He did not try to answer the question. Instead through observation and experimentation deducted that equation to describe what has been defined. No attempt is made to ascertain why it is that way because we've literally have just crawled down from the trees. We simply don't know. Faith and religion fills this gap in knowledge.

as people with short life spans we are always wondering if there is a purpose to everything and we try to make a purpose religion being the best seller something which is meant to lead to salvation has led to so much war famine pestilence and death it is its own apocalypse. sorry a little off track, just because it is there does not mean it has a purpose they say the purpose of a tree is to supply living things with oxygen well what if we are here to supply it with co2 it is all symbiosis we exists because if everything and everything exists because of us

Quote from "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy":
In the beginning, God created the universe and many people consider this to be a really bad move.
The universe is God's self storage rental. He keeps everything there that he doesn't want, but keeps it just in case he might need it.

Philosophically : God created this to feel powerful.

Astrophysically : Matter cannot stay as a singularity for long, hence it exploded into universe.

On a lighter note: Universe is here just for the fun.

Seriously: I have no idea why the heck this universe was created.

The purpose of the universe is to bring knowledge to the "being" that created it.

You could look at the universe as this being's "farm" or "science project". This being is "learning things" from the systems that it has introduced into our planet and civilization and other planets and civilizations.

Alternatively we could be part of an advanced computer game of "Civilization" or "Ages Of Empires" (Don't laugh - it could be true!) - it would be no more difficult to a being millions of years advanced from us technology-wise to create this game as it would be for one of our programmers to make a game of pacman.

The purpose of this universe is to create a point of contact between spirit and matter.

I do not know. Maybe there is no reason for the universe.
