Your question is too broad. Since you're new to the game I recommend a cheap used one off ebay. Some models you can look at are Dell Axim X3 and X30, HP iPaq 22xx, 19xx, RX19xx and RZ17xx. What you should look for is expansion options and battery life. As for memory, most modern PDAs come with at least 64mb RAM and 64MB ROM. You dont need a lot of memory onboard since you can easily expand the memory using a memory card (SD in most cases) which is pretty cheap (2 gigs for 20-50 depending on the deal u get). PDAs are not for everyone especially now that you can have a phone+PDA in one device so don't invest a lot of money in it. As I said get one on ebay for around $100 or less and see if you like it or not. Upgrading to a better device is always easy and you wont lose much money if u decide to sell the $100 model later on ebay.
Dont worry about things like Firewire (why on earth would anyone want or have a firewire port on a pda???? It's only good for transfering huge amounts of data at high speed, which never happens with a PDA) or IrDA, which is nice to have but u will rarely if ever get to use it.
