Both of the top 2 answers are correct depending on what you meant. If you meant the sum of 5 times EACH of the numbers then the first answer is correct. If you meant the smaller number added to 5 times the larger number then the second answer is correct.

Large number = x Small number= y System of Equations x-y=8 5x+y=160 From first equation x=8+y Plug in into second equation 5(8+y)+y=160 40+5y+y=160 6y = 120 y=20 Therefore x=8+(20) (plug in y into first equation) x=28 Large Number: 28 Small Number: 20

Yes 20 and 12
20 - 12 = 8 correct
5 x 20 = 100
5 x 12 = 60
100 + 60 = 160 correct

But there is a possible misundrestanding of the English.
Does 'five times the larger number and the smaller number mean 5 times the larger number plus 5 times the smaller number.
That ambiguity is what causes the problem.

If it is written as a formula, is it
5(x+y)
or is it 5x + y

If the latter, then the answer is 20 and 28

ok, you have two equations:
first of all, let x = bigger number and y = smaller number

x - y = 8
5x + y = 160

now, you have to rearrange the first equation to get either x or y by itself then substitute this into the second equation and simplify.

so, x - y = 8
x = 8 + y
putting x = 8 + y into the equation: 5x + y = 160
5x + y = 160
5(8+y) + y = 160
40 + 5y + y = 160
40 + 6y = 160
6y = 120
y = 20

now, we know from before that x = 8 + y
therefore, x = 8 + 20
x = 28

so your answer is: x = 28, y = 20

Assuming I read this right, we get the following:

x - y = 8
5x + y = 160

If we add the two equations (from top to bottom) we get:

(x + 5x) + (-y + y) = (8 + 160)
6x = 168
x = 28
y = x - 8 = 20

So let's check:

x - y = 8, 28 - 20 = 8 CHECK!
5x + y = 160, 5*28 + 20 = 140 + 20 = 160 CHECK!

Hope this helps :)

If you mean

x-y=8
5x+y=160

add equations
6x=168
x=28
plug into first formula
28-y=8
y=8

OR if you mean

x-y=8
5x+5y=160

then you are right 12 and 20 :-) sorry

x-y=8
y=x-8

5x + y = 160
5x+x-8=160
6x=168
x=28

y=x-8
y=28-8
y=20

the answer is 28 and 20
