The Last Emperor (1987)

He was the Lord of Ten Thousand Years, the absolute monarch of China. He was born to rule a world of ancient tradition. Nothing prepared him for our world of change.

Peter O'Toole .... Reginald Johnston (R.J.)
Ruocheng Ying .... The Governor (as Ying Ruocheng)
Victor Wong .... Chen Pao Shen
Dennis Dun .... Big Li
Ryuichi Sakamoto .... Amakasu
Maggie Han .... Eastern Jewel
Ric Young .... Interrogator

Vivian Wu .... Wen Hsiu (as Wu Jun Mei)

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa .... Chang (as Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa)
Jade Go .... Ar Mo
Fumihiko Ikeda .... Yoshioka
Richard Vuu .... Pu Yi (3 Years)
Tsou Tijger .... Pu Yi (8 Years) (as Tijger Tsou)

I guess I'm the only one who watched this from a worn out-of-print VHS copy. No matter what the quality, THE LAST EMPEROR is arguably among the best of the foreign pictures. The sights and sounds of The Forbidden City are sharp and beautifully screened right on with the provocative events that unfold the coming-of-age life of Pu Yi. It has plentiful moments including his romantic affairs with concubines and how he learns the way of the world as a child. His chronicle of a young emperor boy paints a colorful picture for the first half, only leading to more conflicting matters later, which is the most exciting part. Don't expect to see heads getting chopped off, like I thought would happen (unless you have the longer DVD version), but the intensity of the talk surrounding it sounds horrifying and true. Nevertheless, the dialogue is clearly mystical. Every minute is a feel-good breeze through crafty cinematic art, but it ends too fast, and the narration from Pu Yi in his prison term could use a lot more detailing. Maybe I'll stick around longer and wait to see the Director's Cut which has more. Definitely a winning treat not to be missed for foreign movie lovers and collectors of premium filmfare.

The Last of his Tribe with John Voigt, Ann Archer
The Big Fix with Richard Dreyfus, F. Murray Abraham, John Lithgow
Both drama, the latter with suspense also, and some comedy

Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with an ensemble of every comedian available when made. It is older, but the funniest thing you will ever see.

One of my all-time favorite movies is one that most people have never seen or even heard of: "Scenes from a Mall." It's at least 10 years old and stars Woody Allen and Bette Midler. It takes place in a mall for the most part. The couple is planning their own 25th anniversary party and spend the day arguing and making up. I would definitely reccomend it. Let me know if you watch it/enjoy it!

I think everything comes in the mood you are, I have like 700 movies and before I buy one I need to see it in theatres, but just cause I want to make you smile and make your day a liltte bit lighter I can say "SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE" with Diane Keton and Jack Nicholson, this movie is hilarious, the the actor one of the best in Hollywood, I makes you see how life looks complicated, but at the end you gonna laugh and say "oh god, life is good"

"Waking Life"...it's a longish, philisophical movie with a lot of talking, but I think it's REALLY good! This guy keeps having these elaborate dreams and waking up, only to find he's still sleeping. It's filmed with real people, but dubbed over with computers to make it look cartoony...so it looks half real, and half animated. Ethan Hawk has a small part in it. I watched it 4 years ago or so, but it made an impression on me. Give it a shot!

From Dusk to Dawn (the first one). First half is Drama second half is horror with a little comedy thrown in just for the heck of it. The movie is worth renting just to see Salma Hayak dancing with that snake.

DONT GET "THE LAKEHOUSE" that was the most confusing movie that i have even seen. i would recommend "what dreams may come" it has Robin Williams in it playing a serious role as a man who finds his soul mate and has a family and then something tragic happens and he is trying to find his family in the after life. it is one of my favs. i would recommend all of the X-men movies...the Lord of the Rings series...they are all good movies.

How about A WALK IN THE CLOUDS- older, with keanu reeves or FAR AND AWAY with tom cruise and nicole kidman - older again, great romance stories.

For something funny, try NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY with will farrell or COMING TO AMERICA with eddie murhpy

Or THE SCORE with Robert DeNiro, 25TH HOUR with edward norton , or MAN ON FIRE with Denzel for more drama.

Theres always Gangster flicks....GOODFELLAS, CASINO, BRONX TALE are all great.

good luck!!
