Ants use pheromone trail to form and maintain the line. They deposit a certain amount of pheromone while walking, and each ant prefers to follow a direction rich in pheromone rather than a poorer one. Together with choosing this direction, the ants also reinforce the trail by leaving more pheromone behind.

Ants are one of the most successful groups of insects in the animal kingdom. They are of particular interest because they are social insects and form highly organized colonies or nests which sometimes consist of millions of individuals. Colonies of invasive ant species will sometimes work together and form super-colonies, spanning a very wide area of land. Ant colonies are sometimes described as superorganisms because they appear to operate as a single entity

The ants go in a line because, while they are walking some of the chemical substance has been deposited by them by the smell of which they follows each other and maintain a line.

The ants are Eusocial.Eusocial means reproductive altruism
(which involves reproductive division of labor and cooperative
alloparental brood care),overlap of adult generations,
and permanent (lifelong) philopatry.Due to this nature they
can communicate and transfer message to others by spreading
pheromones when this colony is attacked by stranger.

They follow the leader!! lol Because they are similar to people who are social bugs. They have a complex social structure like human beings and they stay in groups that is why they form lines.
