I'm a high school student and will graduate next year. I'm in a really stressful time right now. My parents and friends asked me what would i want to take in Uni...and i just felt blank. I love social sciences and biology, like travelling (especially in third world countries), i have a great interest in learning different cultures and studying animals, so i got these 2 different interests. However, my dad disagrees with me,,,he thinks if i take anthropology, i wouldn't be able to find work easily and it would be useless.
I prefer more to study majors in Humanities, Social sciences, and since 4 years ago, i have had an interest in psychology. But i don't really know how to put it all together...I was concerned with what kind of job in which field would i be in.
And i'm having a dillemma between BA and BS degrees, I'm afraid i will take the wrong one and will struggle to find any jobs/professions... My school counsellor doesn't do any help!
Any advice for me? Thanks.

Neither of these, though they're all noble endeavors are a fast track to financial success. My advice; do what you LOVE, work hard and money and success (however YOU define it for YOURSELF) will follow.

The University should have some counselors who may be able to give you better advice on your degree. They would be the same people who can later help you look for a job or consider grad school, so they will probably be more helpful than a high school counselor.

The good news is that your first year of college will mostly be taking general requirements classes, so you will have at least a year to decide before you need to take more specific classes. You'll be able to change your mind without losing any time. Maybe after taking some of the basic classes in anthropology, psychology, and biology (the basic classes count to general education requirements anyway - I took classes in all these for my requirements) you'll have a better idea of what you want to do.

So I recommend signing up for 101 classes in all three. You will get a taste of them, you will meet professors who can advise you, and they will all still count towards whichever degree you end up choosing.

Good luck! Most of all, enjoy yourself!

Okay, I see your delima. You are going backwards. This is rather common today. What you are doing is like shooting an arrow into the sky, and hoping that some one will place a real nice target under it when it comes down. It will not work. Decide on your target now, and shoot at it. Don't just shoot and hope. Decide what you want to do NOW-not later. If you like psychology-then BA in psychology is where you need to start. Figure out what you want to be doing in 6-10 years and start working in that direction. Don't just get a degree in anything and hope someone will hire you and pay you what you think you are worth. Now is the time for decision, not in 5 years or so. If you make a mistake and need to change your vocation, it will be just as easy if you plan as it will be if your don't. Maybe easier.

Some school counsellor, sad to say, are next to useless because he did not know how to elicit the info needed for informed counseling.

My first gut reaction is Psychology because it opens many doors in the corporate world. Like HR for example. I used to think like your dad, that the primary consideration for picking a profession is the potential monetary rewards. Since then I realized the primary consideration is picking one that makes you happy and enables you to help others. Someone ones said, if all you do is work for money, then you are no better than a slave. Think of that.

I think your heart and mind is in the right place. I suggest if it is available in your area, to do a desk audit (attend as observer classes for these 3 fields you are interested in). This hopefully would help you decide and be ready when college starts.

College is fun.. enjoy. Good luck.

I would have said the BS bio. A BS is _generally_ I think able to get you some jobs a BA can't, whereas a BA doesn't offer much a BS doesn;t.

My sister did a B.Sc with a specialist in psych and a major in bio on her way to a PhD in psych. See if you can find a school that will let you do a b.sc in psych/bio, it'd be a lot stronger then just a BA.

Get a BS in biology, that way you will be able to travel and study.
