My wife and I were looking forward to our ultrasound to discover the sex of our baby. Unfortunately the technician was unable to discern what the sex could be, and didn't want to venture a guess.

Do you think this means it is more likely a girl? A boy? Some horrible physical deformity?

They took pictures of all sorts of organs, bladder, heart, etc. I don't see how they couldn't tell the sex! I guess we were a bit early at 18 weeks with the ultrasound...

my parents did the same thing... i think it was 18 weeks too. They waited another 2 and then it was obvious. Look ma, I'm a boy! (and no deformities!)

Don't worry! You can't always determine the sex of a baby. If the baby's legs are crossed, you won't be able to get a good look at what's there. Or if the umbilical cord is between the legs, again... not a good look. It would be worse for the tech to "guess" and be wrong than to just tell you that they can't tell.

Sometimes, they will be able to do a second ultrasound, you might have to pay for it. But if you really want to know, it's possible to check again when the baby's a few weeks more mature. Also, when I had my ultrasound, I made sure to have some candy before hand so my baby was active and moving around. We got a great shot the first time through.

Good luck!

No problem with eating- it won't affect the scan at all. I got told off for not drinking enough water- LOL- but they still managed to get all the pictures fine. I had a scan at 17 weeks and they couldn't tell the sex (but it was a pretty average ultrasound machine- just the ordinary doctor's surgery one). At my 19 week ultrasound on Monday we found out we're having a little girl :) Unless your baby is being uncooperative and has their legs crossed, you should be able to find out.

It means that the technician just couldn't see the genitals clear enough to make the determination. Sometimes it is easy to see a boy's penis (for obvious reasons...) when the baby is in the right position. With a girl, its not as easy.

Whatever the case, do not worry about a deformity. Relax dad, your baby's sex will show itself next time around.

Don't worry...just because they couldn't see it doesn't mean it's not there. The baby was probably just positioned weirdly so they couldn't get a good view. Also, most people go around 20 wks for find out the sex so it could have been a tad early. My sister had to go for 4 u/s to find out the sex of her baby (which I don't recommend as the effects of serial u/s are not conclusive) but her baby was almost at 28 wks before they could tell she was a girl...and she was perfectly healthy!

Don't assume the worst! Why would you think the baby has some horrible deformity? The best time to see the sex is 20 weeks!!!!

My baby never stayed still long wnough for the tech to see what the sex was. There is a 50/50 that they are right anyways. a baby's genitals are swollen so sometimes a vagina can look like a penis at theat size.

I had the same situation at 17 weeks. The ultrasound tech showed us how the baby had its legs crossed though, hence why we couldnt find out.

I'm going back at 23 weeks - yeah, seems like forever, but whatever it takes to get an accurate view!

18 weeks is a little too early , average is 20 weeks. @ 22 weeks my doc said he would venture say a 90% chance it was a girl. But some little boys testicles don't drop till later, so you wouldn't be able to see them. My little one was spread eagle, had her little knees up but a perfect view...Didn't see a thing, but like he said...it could still be a boy if he's a late bloomer. But I've already started buying girly stuffs. If she turns out to be a he, he's going to look real funny in those little pink ballerina shoes...kidding.

You should have been able to tell the sex at 18 weeks, but sometimes baby isn't in a position that makes it easy. Maybe your little one was just feeling shy that day.

The baby might not have been in a position so that the tech could tell what the sex is. And even if they do tell you the sex it's not 100%
