Did the doctor say this after seeing the child? If not, get another pediatrician.

I know this sounds crazy but my daughter was 2 months premature so I had to be very careful with her.

Have fresh towels for you and the baby (and a big bathrobe for you because you have to dry the baby first and you need to stay warm), and a baby's wash cloth.

Take a shower with lots of warm steam.....Get in the shower with the baby in your arms, and let the warm water and steam help the baby to breathe better. Gently, very gently, wipe the eye area and face with a baby (small and thin) wash cloth.

Do not use any soap, as this dries out the skin, and is very bad for a cold.

When you get out of the shower, dry the baby's face completely first, then the rest...and put that diaper on fast.
When my daughter was that young, I had to keep her with me so she could be vertical to help her breathe....even when she slept in my arms, I had to hold her more vertical.
I used those tissues with aloe to wipe her nose.....constantly, and she was allowed very little medication.

It seems the warm shower helped her breathing the best, and remember my daughter was a premie so she was so small and delicate....today she's 17..her birthday.

Sometimes the humidifier is bad because some actually put germs into the air if they are not cleaned...get this daily...now who has time when you have a small baby to clean it daily?

I would stop the humidifier, because as Dr. Phil says, "how's that working for you"...and apparently it's not helping.

I would consider a heppa air purifier (lowe's and home depot, and walmart have lots).....and make sure no one, no one smokes around the baby....even when you go to a restaurant (oh that was a treat when mine was young - because I she was nursing).........no one should smoke in your home or apartment, or in any car the baby rides in as second hand smoke causes cancer!

The best thing that I found when they were that young was to run the shower with hot water only, let the room get steamy and go in there with the baby for 5-10 minutes every couple of hours. My doctor recommended this, and it worked WAY better than Baby Vapo-Rub, saline drops or a nasal aspirator. It's worth a try.

Go to a Zellers or a Walmart store and go to the baby isle, you will see a Johnson & Johnsons menthal baby wash for babies that has a cold or a fever, use this each time you bath your baby. Squeeze some in his bath after you have washed his face first and bath him in it. When my little ones were babies and they got a cold thats what I used on them.Make sure that the place where you are dressing him is draft free, when your dressing him make sure he is a vest and then put on his sleepies or what ever your going to put on him. You can even put on a hat on his head to keep his head warm because thats where the heat goes through the top of his head and babies temps are not like ours.Don't forget the socks, there is nothing much that you can give to baby that young with the cold, if you are nursing him that will help him as well because thats where all the nutrients are and that will help him fight the cold, its not to heavey on his chest and its easy to digest. I hope that this will help, and I hope your baby will be better soon.

i have three kids so i think i should know a little about things like that. When my daughter was sick what i would do is you get some vicks and some vasiline mix the vicks with a little vasline not to much then you put a little on the soft spot on the front of his head and the othe one at the back. you ruby him down with the rest both his chest and his back then put a hat on him and a sleeper and he will sweat it out. thats what i use on my kids. the saline is okay also but if he doesnt like things like that in his nose cause my kids never did. I know this might sound gross but its your baby i usuall suck it out. i hope this helps you for his eye use a damp cloths not too too cold water and just pat his eyes with it

Nothing much you can do since your baby is so young. In addition to the humidifier and the saline drops, you can sleep your baby slightly higher on the head so that the snot drips out the nose - will be easier to breathe. Hang in there!

Besides all of the other things mentioned-saline drops-Vick's vapor rub in the humidifier-warm cloth to clean eyes-try giving him a bath in Johnson & Johnson's Vapor Bath..It has a menthol in it and it will help clear him up-It comes in a green bottle and you won't have any trouble finding it. I have used this time and time again for my grandson and it really helps.

use the saline drops in his nose, and use a nasal aspirator to suction all the fluids out.

Use a warm moist cloth on his eyes.

Monitor him for fever that doesnt go away with tylenol.

If his cough becomes gurggly, or his breathing course, call your doctor right away and have him checked for pnuemonia.

Breast milk for strengthening his immune system, a warm bath (not hot, of course) for soothing sinus cavities and helping break it all up out of his nose and chest, and lots of close, skin to skin, contact with mommy and daddy (which makes everyone feel better). The on duty pediatrician at the hospital after my child was born said it best, " Feed him, love him, don't drop him."

Let him sleep propped up a little they sale wedges and even wedge pillows for babies. I know that it is hard because we are going through the same thing with my 3 month old and I hate to see him so congested and was mad when they told me there was nothing we can do. Just love him and give him lots of kisses.
