Hey everyone, I am looking to apply for a city job, and it says that "Minorities and Women Encouraged to Apply".. Now I am NOT racist or sexist in any way, but if I am not a woman or a minority, would I still have a good chance at the job, or will they get first consideration?

from what i hear they have a percentage of minorities and women they have to have....but if they aren't applying for the job then they have to hire whoever has applied. If there is an open spot and they don't have their percentage filled then yes they will get first consideration.....sorry!!!!

At the end of the day the company is going to want to select the best person that will do the role best and make them money - if thats you then go for it !!! The only difficulty may be if the roles are advertised as "Identified" positions which means that for reverse discrimination purposes a company has selected that the role is specificly nominated to be filled with an equity bias applicant that you may not be considered - there are very good reasons for this but that is a whole other question to go into. My advice - put your best foot forward on every job opportunity and leave out the statments like "Im not racists but.....:" it just shows a hangup that any EEO company will not want on their team.

you still have a great chance of getting the job if you are qualified. That just means that they dont want women and minorities to be detoured from applying and to let them know they encourage it. That in no way affects your chances.

No, they will fully consider you. They legally have to make that statement to show they are an equal opportunity employer. It's just saying that this isn't a boy's club only job.
