the yamaha 650 v-star would make you a good bike to start on. Despite the engine size (650) it has plenty of power. And the wheelbase IS longer than a Harley road king.

--I'm tall also and I highly recommend that you stay away from sport bikes. They're not ergonomicaly designed for tall people (in other words you won't fit on it properly).
--Cruiser style bikes are a little better, but still not for you. The seat heights are to low. When the bike is not moving, your legs will be so bent, it will feel unsteady to hold up. And when moving, because of the low seat height, when your feet are on the pegs, your knees will be sticking up and interfere with the handlebars.
--A first bike for you would be a "standard" style (like the Honda Nighthawk series) or an enduro (on-off road) because of the tall seat hight. Search the web for "Honda Nighthawk" to get an idea of what they look like.
--One good thing about enduros, is that they're very light weight. Easy to control for 1st timers.
--For your size with 2 person riding, I wouldn't get anything less then a 500cc.
--For size and fit of bikes, go around to dealers and sit on everything. When you find something you like, buy a used bike of the same model.

Go look in the classifieds for an early '80s Japanese cruiser.
As tall as you are and as much weight as you want to put on the bike check into something along the lines of a goldwing. All the major Japanese importers had stuff like this in the early 80's, big stepped saddle, upright riding position, maybe even a backrest/armrests for the wife. On a bike like this displacement shouldn't be too much of a concern, they were almost all over 1000 ccs (plenty of power) and they were not built to race... just cruise.

A used 650 -750cc bike in a cruiser style would be a good first bike for your size. Take a rider class if you live in the states, they provide the 250cc bikes to learn on. Most states require you to pass this class to get a license.

I would say a Ducati motorbyke, it's a beautiful looking byke suitable for tall people, and just cries out to be ridden, but i must say sorry it's not cheap it is very exspensive....but i just had to mention it....it really is the object of beauty. there is also the Yamaha Virago 250 that is also suitable for tall people, or Harley Davidson.

you do recognize the seat is going from the tank to the rear mild...you dont ought to sit down down with your nuts against the tank... slide your *** back alongside the seat... so lots greater area to your legs now.... this is going to shrink the pillion room.. yet thats not lots of an argument for a learner..

i suggest a suzuki hayabusa or a kawasaki zx-14r. they're somewhat quick, and have a stretched riding position. they also do the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds :-)
