Laughing out loud
Though for a very long time I thought (and still prefer) it was:
Lots of love
Languishing on Lounge
is another possibility (doing nothing, vegging out at home)

The wording in an email, etc, can appear rather unfriendly or discurtious to the receiver of the email, and could cause offence were no offence was meant. This is because the receiver can not see the expression on the face of the sender, so can not judge whether the sender meant what was written in a friendly , or discurtious way. To avoid any such misunderstandings, a sender would finish a sentence or message with LOL. In other words: "I'm laughing out loud, as I'm only joking!"

No one has actually explained that this is an abbreviation used by textphone users, and as well as meaning laugh/ed out loud it can also be used to mean "Lots of love" if it is placed at the end of the message. It is not necessary to uses it in ordinary typed messages or notes, and is sometimes thought to be somewhat rude, and is often found to be the cause of annoyance on the part of the reader although of course it is perfectly acceptable on a textphone as these abbreviations save space where the number of available characters is limited..
