I noticed yesterday that a few of our fish have bubbles on their bodies. They are in a tropical tank - which we have had for a year. We have never encountered any problems but today, we have 5 dead fish... I think the Silver dollars are about to go too. The hardy Molly's seem ok so far

Have found that the heater has been switched off. Obviously the tropical fish are not going to like that.

I can honestly say that the bubbles do not look like white spots.

I have had this problem too, and here is the cure.

The bubbles are parasites that get on fish. The problem started when we bought a regal tang that had it.

We call it the Ick.

Take a dish of fresh, not salt water, and add one teaspoon of baking soda to it. Then, one by one dip the fish out of the salt water and drop then into the fresh water for about five minutes or more.

I know it sounds crazy, but it works. By giving them a freshwater "bath", you are basically bursting the parasites. Since the ick is so used to the salt water, once placed in the fresh water they suck up the water so fast that they explode. Not the fish, the parasites.

There may still be spots, but they will go away after time.

Another thing, in addition to the bath, is to buy a couple of blood shrimp. They are gorgeous and expensive, but they will actually clean and eat the ick off of your fish.

We only had to do this once, and our fish were cured!!!

Yes, the ick can kill fish fast, so I would do this as soon as possible!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Are they definately bubbles or are they small spots? They may have white spot which needs treatment straight away. Check out one of the websites listed to see if you can find out what's wrong. Hope you get the problem sorted.

There's something wrong with your water not your fish. Test the tank water but check with your local aquarium just to be safe. If you don't have a local aquarium there are many online that you can contact and ask their advice.

Fish get a sickness called ick. It will kill them and it spreads from fish to fish fast. You can get stuff to pour in the water to kill the ick at a local petstore or walmart.
Good luck!!
