Depends on where you live, how much time you have, how much time you want to invest, if you have any fears, how much money you want to spend.
I say dog. Mans best friend. But then I also suggest a horse, womans best friend.
Just think about YOUR situation, not other peoples.

You have hoppies? So do I! I have lots of hoppies, they are my kids. and I also have two rabbit hoppies!!! They all like to hopp. Aren't hoppies so hoppie?
You should get a rabbit, they are very hoppie
Or get a kid and add some caffeine! That makes for a real hoppie!!!!
Ummmmm- what the hell is a hoppie????
Sorry, I think that cats, hamsters, fish, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, lizards or hermit crabs are good for the beginners. I have all of these pets!
AND I HAVE LOTS OF HOPPIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

A hamster is the most entertaining pet to have if you have no room. If you have a yard, then definitely a dog. Depends on your age as to what breed to get. If you're a young adult with a lot of time and patience, get an Alaskan Malamute. If you're a young adult with a lot of time and a little patience get a Labrador or Golden Retriever. Older adults should get a smaller dog that doesn't need a lot of exercise like a Shitsu.
Or if you just want a pet to relax you and isn't tactile, get fish. You can't beat a well kept fish tank filled with fish who have character :)

If I was going to advise you, I'd say stay away from anything out of the norm, they can seem like a good idea but be too much for a first time pet owner. Dogs, pick a friendly breed, cats, just go nuts here, fish are fun too, I can pet my guppies.

If you want a bigger animal go for a cat or a dog-whichever one you like more. If you want a smaller animal, get two rats. They're very smart, clean, and friendly. If you get two, then you only have to handle them about once every few days, although they love being handled more often. The only ones who say rats are dirty and yucky are those who have never had them as pets. They are great!

i have a female rabbit. Females are known to be more agressive than males but rabbits are generally more active than guinea pigs. My sister has a grey hamster which is such a character so i recommend either rabbit or hamster or if you want a more exotic pet get something like a gerbil or chinchilla

such an evasive question, do you live in a house, flat, caravan, are you at home every day, some of the day, hardly ever, do you go away a lot? Bit more info required.

Have you thought about getting a rock? Very low maintenance. Very good listeners, although don't expect a response. They tend to keep to themselves. Enjoy ;)
