I would like to remove a name tag froma someone's shirt. The tag is white and the shirt is blue. I tried smudging it and it did disappear but the shirt looks touched up. Is there a better way? I have The Gimp and MS Photo Editor. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for all of your help, but I'm still lost. What does the stamp tool and clone tool look like? Where is it?

1. Download a free trial version of Photoshop from adobe.com.
2. Open your photo file in Photoshop
3. Using the layers tool, add a new layer over the current photo layer
4. Select the stamp tool. In the options pane, set the brush size so that the stamp tool picks up sufficient size of the white from the T-shirt
5. Keep the ctrl key pressed and click on any one spot of the white T-shirt
6. Release ctrl key, make sure the new blank layer is selected, and position the stamp tool over the name tag you wish to hide.
7. Leftclick and move your mouse across the name tag.
(Important: When you did ctrl+click on a spot on the white background, that spot was picked up as the point of origin to be copied. When you click and drag the stamp tool across the name tag, the stamp tool is actually copying and pasting everything in its way from the point of origin. So make sure you choose a spot on the white T-shirt that most resembles what you want in place of the name tag.)
The stamp tool automatically gives a feather effect to the edges, so the touched-up area won't stand out.

Both ur photo editors have limited capabilities. I suggest using Adobe Photoshop.
However if u insist on using ur softwares, try these....
1. cut and Paste from another part of the shirt using Feather Cut, if ur software supports it.
2 Use Clone stamp tool if there is one.
if nothing works and if your editor supports changing the transparency, do the following:
At the center of the white Tag, copy and Paste from another part of the shirt.
At the edges, paste a copy with reduced transparency. Try these operations for a few times for good results.

Hey everyone, she already said she had GIMP, no need to download and learn Photoshop -- would you tell her to use a shotgun to kill mosquitos?
In GIMP, the tool you want (like the Stamp tool that Inquisitive talks about) is call Clone. Hold Ctrl and left-click to tell the clone where to clone FROM, then you can paint with the normal click-and-drag motion. Instead of painting a color, it will copy from where you started (the ctrl-click). You will want to play with the options for this tool until you like what you get: fade out and opacity.
I'd suggest keeping opacity high (90-100%), since you want to completely cover the logo. The fade out is both the brush size and the feathering that was mentioned earlier.
GIMP is fine for the touch-up you want to do, similar to earlier versions of PaintShop Pro (I still prefer v5 of PSP).

The easiest way is to use Adobe PhotoShop. I'm on Yearbook staff, and last year we had to remove a kid from a picture and place him somewhere else. The photo editor used PhotoShop and moved the kid out of the picture and it looked like he was never there to begin with! It was so cool.
