why do they have big eyes and huge mouths? This myth should be met with hypocrisy considering that early anime artist were influenced by the likes of Walt Disney and Chuck Jones. They would emulate this "Americanized" look and apply these to their early character design, which in turn became the basis for drawing anime. You'll find that this is not the case for most anime, contemporary artist such as Shirow Masamune have taken up a more realistic design for their characters.

To answer your question, no the japanese do not dislike their own features, you have to realize that japanese artist thought that if they created western looking characters then their work would find acceptance within western countries. Eventually, this style of art became the standard for drawing anime.

You know what, what it really is was that when anime first started, it was around WW2. So, when the americans first came, the japanese were intriqued with their eyes. You know, they don't have blue eyes. So, when they looked at a blue eyed person, it made their eyes look larger. That was mainly it, besides the fact that europeans have folds on their eyelid.

It's the truth, seriously, I heard about this a while back.

japanese cartoons have large eyes mainly because of the 'eyes are the windows to your soul' concept. if they'd draw their cartoons with small eyes reflecting theirs, it'd be harder to convey the full emotion of the character especially since in animation, it's all about exaggeration not to mention, the eyes are the most expressive in the face. that's why if you haven't noticed, a lot of anime artists/animators love playing up the eyes so it'd draw attention to them thereby emphasizing clearly the emotion.

there's also the fact that that the first anime 'Astro Boy' was created reminiscent to western cartoons just tweaked by osama tezuka to his own style. since about that time, disney was growing, i guess he patterned it after the standard western/disney sd(super deformed) cartoon

as with the narrow eyes, i can't tell you if asians as a whole hate them.. i'm fine with mine but then again my eyes aren't as narrow as tiny slits

I think they just want to make them better looking and big eyes in cartoons can really express emotions really easily than narrow eyes

some anime do have characters with different shaped eyes. you will actually see some narrow-eyed characters, esp in manga.
i'm asian, and i don't hate having narrow eyes, no. it doesn't bother me at all.
the huge eyes don't have to do with how WE feel about it. it's just a part of manga/anime and creating cute characters I guess.

It makes it easy to convey the feelings and emotion with the big eyes. As 2D is more complex and difficult to draw out human emotion. It is also conveyed that big eyes are more friendly then drawing/having small or beady where those are used to convey bad or evil people/intentions. Also as Lord Voldemort says Dr.Osamu Tezuka, the artist who started the manga Astoboy started the trend and it have been the standard ever since.

Osamu Tezuka started the trend. He copied the huge eyes of Disney characters. And also, big eyes allow exaggerated expressions and are a big help in showing emotions.

Anime characters tend to have large eyes because the eyes are thought to be the window to the soul. Large eyes are able to show more expression.
