I am breast feeding and I was told by the doctor to keep taking prenatal pills. I do not have no more pills left, so I am taking regular vitamins instead. (One A Day) for women... Do you guys think that it is safe? I also give my son similac with iron, bascially I am doing both breast feeding and formula...

Thank you for your advice...

My OB/Gyn told me it didn't matter if they were women's or prenatal vitamins - just as long as I took them. Either one will give you and your son enough of what you need.

One thing I noticed, though, was that I had a much greater milk supply when I was taking the prenatal vitamins. I was an exclusive pumper, so it was easy to see how fluctuations in my diet affected my supply. The prenatal vitamins had 4x as much folic acid as the women's vitamin.... maybe that made the difference?

At any rate, Nature's Bounty makes a good OTC prenatal vitamin; it's sold in grocery stores and their website [below] offers a Store Locator.

It should be safe, but it's best to take a prenatal vitamin because it has more of what a pregnant or lactating woman needs.

Get an over the counter prenatal vitamin. There are a whole bunch to choose from and for about less than $10 you can get a whole year's worth.

Not a problem. Prenatal pills are just vitamins. Fenugreek is an herb used in cooking which also tends to increase milk supply. There will not be any harmful interaction. EDIT: Linda, most docs recommend continuing to take prenatal vitamins while nursing. There is no reason to NOT do so ... they are vitamins.

You could get another prescription from that doctor if that's what he wants you to keep doing. My obgyn told me the same thing, it's to make sure that the baby is still getting all of the nutrients that he/she needs. I wouldn't use one a day though. When I was pregnant with my 2nd child, I COULD NOT stand the taste of those pills and I would literally throw them up everytime so I told my doctor and he told me to stop taking them and take children's chewable vitamins instead. You can take either one or two a day. I had to breastfeed and bottle feed my kids but that was because I wasn't producing enough milk. If you want to keep breastfeeding the baby I suggest that you stop bottle feeding him/her because they'll grow a taste for that over the breast milk, that and because it's less work to suck from a bottle than from mom's breast. If you feel that he/she's not getting enough, just feed him/her more often and you should start producing more milk.

When that baby gets older and I know kids love taking those chewable vitamins but make sure not to give them a lot because my doctor told me that it could kill them (like taking 14, which I never allowed mine to do though).

Good luck to you!

They are safe just the same, but the prenatal vitamins are better suited for a breast feeding mom and baby.

I'm not a doctor but I don't see why this wouldn't be safe. However I think your best bet would be to go to the drug store and buy over the counter prenatals. Those have higher doses of some things and lower of other to help with your energy levels and it may even help keep your milk supply up as well. Good luck!

I went through the same issue. Go to Wal-Mart and buy the prenatal vitamins over the counter. I took them before, during, and after my pregnancy. My doctor and pharmacist both agreed that they were the same as a prescription.

YOu can always go to a local drug store and get the over the counter prenatal vitamins... they're much cheaper than the prescription ones.

Well the vitamins are basically for you and not necessarily for your son. Whatever vitamins you take are fine. They also sell vitamins for lactating women. What happens is when your son is breastfeeding he will rob you of your nutrients and vitamins and if you do not take vitamins that could make you anemic. But regular vitamins are fine, just make sure you are eating healthy and drinking lots of water.

I actually took a vitamin similar to one a day, and i breastfed 3 children... it won't hurt. The pre-natal vitamins are recommended because it contains enough vitamins for you and the child. But keep a good diet and eat plenty of fruits and veggies and you and your baby will be fine. I only supplemented with my last baby, they are all healthy...

Good luck
