It would be helpful to know your general location. Most cities with a population over 30,000 have a local chapter of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. One of their missions is to help those in need. It is not at all unusual for them to help people in your situation furnish a home free of charge. Keep in mind that the furniture will be used and the selection will be limited to what they have on hand. They usually provide free delivery for those who need it. Look for them in your local telephone book.

Good luck with your situation.

Freecycle offers a lot of things and is environmentally concerned. However, in your immediate need, I'd contact my local Social Services Department for vouchers to places like Salvation Army or St. Vincent De Paul. In my area, they even deliver. Have you contacted any type of women's services (for displaced or abused wives)?

Yes, it's called "Freecycle". It is a Yahoo group in every major city that was created to keep the unwanted stuff from being sent to the land fill. Users post items that they need or that they don't want. You give or get the item for free.
