I was wondering if drummers read music. And if not do they do it all by memorization? If that's the case drummers need more credit.

Are any of the people answer this actually DRUMMERS? I am. I've played for 10 years and here's what I know. Most drummers have at least an idea of how to read music. But it is pointless to do so unless you are playing in an orchestra, like timpani for example. Timpani is the only "drum" that uses true "notes" from a scale. All other drumming sheet music is just a scale of highest to lowest tones, so there is really no need to read other than for timing purposes. I do know how to read and write music, but I never ever ever do it. It is just a waste of time. For the time it takes to write the long complicated pieces that I play, I could just as easily memorize it. I think as far as rock/pop or any type of radio hit music, 95% of the drummers play from memory. Hope this helps.

P.S. I agree, we drummers do deserve more credit!

Drummers definitely know how to read music, weather they use it or not while playing is different. Most experienced drummers can usually go by just listing and playing, or coming up with their own beat. It's definitely difficult. And they do need more credit. With out them there would be no band whats so ever.

Yes drummers read music, the same kind of music as every other instrument. Also drummers like any other music player, memorizes their music for playing.

Here's some drummer music examples:

It depends on the drummer. Some do and some don't. There is a special notation for percussion, but I doubt most rock drummers use this when writing a song. Just like most vocalists or lead singers in a band won't write down a melody. Most songs come about through jamming.

do orators read words? well most of them i can ASSUME do.
i haven't read the drummers handbook but i would imagine it's pretty much up to the individual person/musician rather than a generalization.
