muslims started persecuting christian pilgrims in the holy land.some pilgrims returned to europe complaining about the rude treatment they recieved at the hands of their muslim hosts.the pope hears of this and declares a holy war to win back the holy land for the christians.thousands answer his call.jerusalem in conquered by the the crusaders who immediately put every man, woman and child, christian, muslim and jew to the sword.the streets of jerusalem flow with the blood of the slaughtered.after that many of the crusaders return home.the holy land is only protected by a small number of men.80 years later the crusaders are defeated at the battle of the horns of hattin.jerusalem is back in muslim hands.onother pope declares a holy war.again thousands answer his call.this is how it continues for a few centuries.jerusalem changes hands another 2 times before finally surrenduring.the last christian stronghold of accre is conquered by the muslims and that is the last of it.it would be another couple of centuries before a christian army would enter jerusalem.it was when the british defeated the ottaman turks in world war 1.

The first crusade was declared by the Pope to "rid the Holy Land of the Infidels." In reality, the different nations of Europe had become rather peaceful, and knights all over Europe were getting restless and starting to fight each other and commonfolk. The Pope decided to channel that energy into a war on the Muslims, instead. And they didn't stop there. Once they got to Jerusalem, they slaughtered everyone in sight. Not just Muslim soldiers, but women and children, including Jews and even other Christians who already lived there. They truly believed in "kill 'em all and let God sort them out."

They were 8 crusades.
The first was a crusade of poor peoples who killed only the Jews before being destroyed killed or enslaved in Anatolia.
The second composed of lords took Jerusalem after an infamous massacre ad founded a kingdom in middle east
The most infamous was the fourth which instead of going to holly earth plundered Byzance (orthodox capital now Istanbul)
We can say that it has greatly increased hatred between Christians and Moslem's
