I notice there are a lot of LADDERS. And once I saw a crutch in the middle of the road....
How about you?

Doing mosquito control, I end up spending quite a bit of time in ditches along freeways. I've seen some weird stuff.

I find a lot of hubcaps, but that's not all that surprising. Once I found a whole set of four hubcaps though, two on each side of the freeway, and all about a quarter-mile apart from each other. I always wondered how exactly that happened.

There seems to be a lot of clothing lost on the side of the freeway. Individual kid's shoes seem to be the most common. One time I found a pair of very... um... used underwear. That was gross.

Mattresses, old appliances and furniture are also common. Once there was a sofa and loveseat combo that looked like they were perfectly fine - no visible damage or wear and tear. It had rained the night before, and the cushions were completely and totally soaked though, so I left them there. They disappeared before they dried out.

Dead critters are pretty common too. Deer, coyotes, cats and porcupines are the main ones. Once I found the carcass of a black bear - innards, and skin, but no meat or bones. Another time I found a whole set of bones of a juvenile black bear (I still have the skull). There was also a time I found a giant pile of slabs and slabs of animal fat. Man, that smelled gross. Not as gross as the dead skunk I found and watched decompose over the course of the month. The day it literally exploded with maggots was the worst.

Other unusual dead critter finds have included a Slurpee cup filled with dozens of drowned shrews, a set of deer ribs hung in a tree, and another site with dozens of stripped and headless deer carcasses. The most disturbing was a fully intact deer fetus. The mother had been hit by a car and the fetus must have been ripped out and it was thrown a dozen yards from where the mother's body was.

One of the coolest things was a long-tailed weasel that didn't even realize I was there. He was hopping and darting all around, about a foot away from me until he finally noticed my boot, came up to take a sniff, looked puzzled, and slowly looked up. When he realized he was right next to a person he took off like a shot!

I've seen stuffed animals, that makes me sad thinking some kid is crying over losing their favorite toy. My dad once risked life & limb getting my little brothers toy on the expressway, so it reminds me of that, too.

I once saw a ton of clothing scattered everywhere. It was all over the place. Shirts, socks, etc....it almost looked like someone decided they didn't want to do their laundry and just ditched all their clothes.
