There are many definitions for the word gene. Basically it is a unit of heredity. To many biologists that means a group of DNA molecules that code for one particular protein.

They are found in MOST of the cells in your body.

There are those genes in chromosomes in the nucleus of all cells that have nuclei (i.e. not red blood cells).

There are also genes in other bits of the cell e.g. the mitochondria (which is the place where energy is generated). These genes are completely seperate from the ones in the nucleus.

Plants have yet more genes in their chloroplasts (where photosynthesis happens).

Viruses have genes too, but they may be made of RNA instead of DNA.

Genes are found in a few places and some times different living organisms have different named things,...

So odds are everyone on here is right about a place Genes are found.

(Gene is also a persons name incase anyone thinks your talking about a person).

Genes are part of your DNA, they are in everything and tell everything what to do. Includeing how you should look, how things are shaped, how things should grow, and how you should heal.
So Genes tell your DNA what to do with it's self, don't they XD Okay,.. DNA and Genes are kinda the same. But usually when people babble about Genes are either are talking about the identified reoccuring pieces of DNA doctors/science has noticed or just ways that they think two people look similar and they think this means they are related.

Genes are found on chromosomes, which every cell has. They reside in the nucleus during normal cell S phases and interphase.

In every cell in your body. More specifically, the nucleus of the cell--the center part.

Wikipedia has much information about cells and cell structure.
