i got a leak on my mains pipe, the old cock is dripping and i need to replace it with a new one. a large one. what size cock do i need my pipe size is one inch.

looks like you need a plastic stopcock, it should fit in your pipe hole perfectly as its about 6 inches and quite thick ,it should stop your dripping/

First try tightening the nut on top. Gently. If that doesn't work a one inch pipe has to have a one inch stopcock. Go to the hardware store and ask. They are usually good people. You can't change it to any other size without a lot of extra work. If it's to confusing take a picture of it with a digital camera and take it with you to the hardware store.

Well, a 1" valve should work fine with minimum changes to your "****" piping. You can also use larger "****" valves, but they won't improve the flow of water and you'll have to make additional changes to your "****" pipe to fit it on.

chances are that the packing nut is loose just behind the valve handle you will see a small nut gently tighten that nut it should reseal the packing just dont over do it.
