We were working for a builder in a different state installing steel stairs for each new building going up there are eight buildings total. Unfortunately the builder was not very happy with the time it took for us to fabricate the stairs and have them delivered and installed by us. They did tell us that they are going to find another company to complete the final three buildings because it was more convenient to have a local company work for them. Here’s the problem; they are not paying us for the work that we did complete. In total we finished close to $90,000.00 worth of work that is owed to us. No one from their company will return our calls, and when we do get someone they say a check is on the way. Its has been over 4 months since we received a payment from them. What are our options in getting our money? They are rental buildings so I’m not sure if we can put a lien on the property. Any advice would help out.

It doesn't matter if they are rental buildings or not. Usually a bank or some kind of financing company is lending the money for the project. You file a lien with the lender and freeze their money until a settlement is completed, possibly in court if necessary.

1. I hope you signed a contract.
2. It would be helpful if your contract stated the terms to paying for the work - i.e. how long after the work is complete you expect payment.
3. If your contract says you were to complete all 8 buildings, you may actually still be entitled to being paid for all 8 buildings. That depends on the wording, though.
4. Your lawyer will know exactly how to pursue your money.

Oh, and you could place a lien on any of their property, not just these buildings.
