It's like a Continental Breakfast only with lunch fare like hors d'oeuvres, cold cut platters, fruit trays, cheese cubes, a variety of breads, some hot sterno trays of Swedish meatballs, pigs in a blanket, several condiments, juices, etc.

As stated in some responses by example, it's finger food and lighter fare for lunch. Generally, the food is easy to eat, balance on your knee :), is less likely to cause you to doze in an hour or so and doesn't require a lot of utensils.
For example, at seminars and full-day meetings, lunch is quick, buffet style and almost impossible to spill!
