The most successful actor of all time?
When I think of a successful actor, I think of the films they have been involved with that are classic films. John Wayne, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Robert DiNiro, Al Pacino, Orson Welles, Humphrey Bogart - all have created a resume of classic American films that will be shown forever.
Tom Cruise? Maybe - and that's a big maybe - "Risky Business," or "Born on the Fourth of July" ... has he made anything close to a film that will live - be studied - be enjoyed - through the generations?
And I agree with whoever wrote "he's a nut" LOL - he's one serious wackjob LOL

Success in terms of Box Office revenue, hits vs. flops or peer review? The Academy Award is a very good indicator of who is "successful" as the fellow actors vote on who will win the award each year. I do not think Tom Cruise has won ANY acting awards, but his films have made a lot of money. As for "GREAT" actors? How about the short list of the men who have actually won the Academy Award TWICE?
Spencer Tracy
Gary Cooper
Marlon Brando
Jack Nicholson
Henry Fonda
Dustin Hoffman
Tom Hanks
Any of these guys are way better actors than Cruise. And Tom Hanks films have probably made more money than Cruise's collectively.

I'll have to say that he is one of the most successful actors out there but my vote would have to be Jack Nicholson and for many reasons... First, his career spans over 30 years... second, he has the most Oscar nominations of any male actor (12, only Meryl Streep has more with 13) and has one three statues, one in every decade... and lastly, he's Jack! One of the coolest guys on the planet! Yeah, Tom's good but Jack's better.

I mean Yes, Tom Cruise is an awesome actor and very succesful but he has tough shoes to fill to be considered "most succesful of all times. I mean there are so many great ones that he is up against, like Tom Hanks for instance or John Travolta, Nicolas Cage.....sooooo many. So I guess yeah.....they are all pretty damn close! ;)

I don't completely agree with you. but, at the same time, i agree with you some.
personnaly i'm not a big Tom Cruise fan. but, i think he is a good actor... at times. his early movies were good (M:I, M:I:2, Top Gun) but, lately his more recent movies have all been crap (Vanilla Sky, Jerry McGuire, etc.)
it's true he has been in a lot of movies... not all of his movies are necessarily box office winning movies though (M:I:3, War of the Worlds, etc.) but, yes, he has starred in a lot of movies. some of them great, some of them crapy.
i think Tom Cruise is a very successful actor. but, i don't think he's the most successful actor OF ALL TIME. most deffinately not!
Great Question By The Way :-)

No, I give it to Robin Williams. The first actor to have two films released in a year which both grossed over $100M and Robin has an Oscar.
I'm not selling Tom short, but for every "Born on the Fourth of July", there is a "Vanilla Sky" or "Legend"

I agree with you as in successful financially by being an actor, but as far as quality of acting I don't agree. Whatever he is doing he is successful because he has such a huge fanbase that they keep seeing his movies & letting him get paid. I think because of his recent appearances on different tabloids, shows, and media coverage people are starting to turn on him. All in all I agree with you as far as being successful. An Oscar winning performance is far from him though.

Good question. Could be. Who would top him? Make that short list. And it all depends on your criteria. In terms of "hits", money made, or in terms of the art of acting. I would say that Lawrence Olivier was a far better actor, for example, and therefore "successful". See what I mean?
