Take hwy 85 from Nuevo Laredo (just across the border from Laredo) toward Monterrey. A little before Monterrey, take the fork west (right) toward Saltillo. A little before Saltillo take Hwy 57 south. It goes all the way to Mexico City.

Two cities that you'll go through are well worth seeing: San Luis Potosí and Querétaro. In both cases, you go into the historic center. Both have large pedestrian only zones.

The AAA has a good map of Mexico, but for the most detail you should get the Guia Roji road atlas.
