There are a lot of ways to rank institutions of higher education. Some compare small colleges to other small colleges and large universities to other large universities. Some systems/methods look at specific areas of study and research and some systems look at cost, diversity of student body etc. There is a great variety of colleges and universities in the United States and what is right for one person isn't always the best for everyone else. Columbia University is an excellent university but it is very different from some of the other "Ivy Leagues" because it is in New York City. It also has a smaller women's college affiliated with it (Barnard) which offers a blend of the advantages found at large universities and small liberal arts colleges. Having said all of this...check out US News annual rankings at http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankindex_brief.php There are also other ranking systems.
