i'm from ireland and we've had no smoking in any public work places for the last 2 years. it has work very well, most people agree it has worked out for the best. most pubs have a small outside covered heated area for smokers. people don't smoke as much on a night out anymore. it's a much nicer, cleaner, fresher experience when having meals now. your clothes no longer smell after a night out.

Being a smoker, its difficult to have a drink and not smoke at the same time. The two have gone hand in hand for years and I'm sure I read somewhere that most pubs were not happy with the idea as they thought that they would lose a lot of business. There are also a lot of people who wouldn't be classed as smokers, but do have a cigarette when they drink. My Irish friend said that in Ireland they have large barns or shelters attached to some of their pubs and most of the smokers sit in there to drink too. But I can't see smokers being accommodated to like that in England. It seems to me that this is all a farce, the government is promoting giving up smoking and all that jazz, but they make loads of money from those who smoke in taxes. I don't think that people should be exposed to smoke if they do not wish to be, but what about smokers rights? Council workers local to my area are no longer allowed smoking breaks. I'm sure this is the way things will go, but i can forsee lots of stress in the workplace if that's the case.

The ban on smoking in pubs is a classic scam by the government. They get the anti-smoking lobby on side and win a few extra votes whilst spreading the LIE that they are actually concerned with peoples health.

If this was such a noble gesture as to actually be concerned about peoples health 1. They would have made it 100% illegal 2. They would have addressed the health risks from binge drinking, car exhausts, etc, ect and implemented a more appropriate plan.

The ban on smoking is just another exercise which allows those individuals concerned to give themselves a hearty pat on the back and tyell themselves what a good job they are dong. It's got nothing to do with peoples health!!

I think it is a good idea. It was introduced into New Zealand in stages over about the last ten years. Prior to this, whenever I went to a Country Music Club meeting I'd find my clothes stunk of cigarette smoke afterwards. After the ban was introduced the smell went.
I'm in China now, and they allow smoking in bars and restaurants, and the smell has returned.
I know most smokers don't agree, it's just like people who like loud music don't like the volume being turned down or litterbugs not being allowed to dump their rubbish wherever they like.
I like the idea and think it should be everywhere.

I think smoking in pubs should be banned right away, and in all other public place's, even out in the street, there is nothing worse walking along and then get a face full of some other selfish sod's smoke, it is disgusting, yyyyyack

Investigate the link between smoking bans and Nazism. The first country in the world to ban smoking in public was Hitler's Third Reich. Are there any comparisons with our government? Makes you think though?
