i like pointful , it makes sense, i guess when we are told it it is always too late, but we will say to our kids too, to save our carpets and to get our own back....

If you are speak to a teanager it's probably pointless! My step son's friend walked loads of mud into my house. It was a right mess, so I gave him the dustpan and brush and hoover and got him to clean the mess up.
Sometimes actions speak louder than rhetorical words - he never did it again and used to make a point of telling me his shoes were clean.

Our family takes our shoes off at the door and puts on house shoes or flip flops. This is very common in Asia. Once you get used to doing it, this becomes part of the routine. It has not stopped the cat from throwing up on the carpet.
