god, sometimes you can't tell, hey? if in doubt, i usually look for boobs, or if they're flat, i look at their walk, posture, body language, etc. but sometimes you really can't tell. i spose you could ask their name, but what if it's tony/toni, jordan, terry/terri or something else unisex?
that reminds me of a funny story, remember Hanson, the 3 brothers band? well the youngest was walking past a mirrored wall when he saw this chick in the reflection, and thought, "damn, that's the ugliest girl i've ever seen!" then he realized he was looking at himself. true story.

You're his safety net and he's taking advantage of it. You going back was your choice - so we'll leave it at that. From the things you say, it doesn't look like he's interested in finding true love, but for him it's about having fun and playing the field, so he has no such thoughts about settling. This is evident from how he treats you. Why couldn't he treat you right? That's his problem, everyone has his good and bad side, but I guess morally his bad side's sticking out like a sore thumb and getting the better of him. Why weren't you good enough? For sure you're good enough for anyone with good moral values, but your confidence and your trust have taken a big hit, and your self-esteem is on an all time low. At this point, it's easier to blame yourself as the source of all the problems. You can't change the way some people are, that's the only thing you can blame yourself for thinking by going back to him all those times. Get off your computer, go out and stare at the sky, clear your mind. Once you move on, you might find that peace of mind you were looking for.

Your first sight is compared with a template in your mind, formed very soon after birth. Women tend to have softer faces, with less prominent eyebrows. If a woman looks a bit masculine, or a man a bit feminine, you have to look for a nano-second longer for your brain to decide.

Then there are a few where the jury's out for longer...

Take Boy George, for example. I've noticed that when he pops up on TV, I immediately think I'm looking at a woman, and have to quickly re-tune to the fact that he's a man. It's the soft shapes on his face, and the feminine eyebrows.

A bloke wearing make-up usually just looks like a bloke, wearing make-up.

Well, in a split second look, all you are able to go on will be the clothes, hair and physical generalities - you could easily be confused by an androgynous woman with short hair wearing jeans and a sweater. As most people dress to their gender, it's often not hard to make the distinction.
