Am I to understand that by "an air of mystery", you mean to feign aloofness to the other person? If so, I'd have to say the most alluring thing is a combination of the two - subtle and NOT OVERT flirting.

Definitely an air of mystery, but I tend to start that overt flirting stuff when I get all excited. Actually, there's something to be said for mixing a little of both, in my opinion :)
