The main reason that the Native Americans don't have a day is that they haven't wanted one. The last thing they want really, at least according to my friends that are involved in tribal activities, is to have that sort of thing going one. In truth, most just want to be let alone. If we want to do something for them we should get both the US government AND the representatives of the denominations of the various religious groups that persecuted them for so many years to issue a formal PUBLIC apology for all that has been done....AND provide more financial benfits to them and INCREASE the freedoms that they have on their own land (IE legalize the Ghost Dance) I would even say that the varous tribal lands should be considered separate, independant entities within the US, like states or territories rather than part of the state they are in. Either that or give back all the land that was stolen...
And before you ask I am like 3/16 Cherokee...

I think you're right. You should give them more priviledge than the American-born foreigners like the Asians or blacks. Eventhough I'm not a Native American, I always felt unfair when Native Americans aren't given the title that they are the founders of these vast country: the United States. I've even found out that Native Americans turned out to be the mostly alcoholics in the United States. I knew the reason why they are alcoholics. But at least most Native Americans I know are different. They are proud of their heritage and, as part of their culture, they nurture and respect the environment, unlike most Americans who just litter things just about everywhere. Frankly speaking, Caucasian Americans are still the "outsiders" just like the Asian-Americans, Black Americans and the Latinos. Don't get offended please.

So funny you should ask that today...we are going to a Native American Pow Wow today that I have waited for a whole year ! I am not Native American but have so much respect & interest in them. A medicine man told me that being Indian isn't just a matter of bloodline ! I have a great closeness to them & they have excepted me more readily than most people. Yes, they were here first, this was their land first. They had a lot of dirty deals done to them. I use Thanksgiving day as my day of homage to them & my house & decorations is all Native American & NOT pilgrims !
I saw a profound picture one time of Mt. Rushmore & above the faces of the 4 American Presidents in the clouds over each head were the faces of 4 Indian Chiefs,
that says it all !

I have gone to many Native American Pow wows. They don't seem to have to have a day. They are satisfied within themselves it seems. I have much respect for them. I have gone to the museum in Ct. near Foxwoods and I have heard the stories where we tried to wipe out large tribes of them by giving them blankets infested with smallpox. It's terrible. However, they have made a comeback and the ones that own the casinos are richer than ever and they give back to those who are in the midwest and are very poor.

Good point.
The reason is that our government still views native Americans as a threat. They still live on reservations, in poverty and are still suffering at the hands of the US government.
Welcome to the land of imperfection. We brought them Small Pox and pain and I guess the U.S. is still obliged to cause more suffering than not.

Native Americans have been compensated more than any other group-I'm sick of minority groups getting special treatment. It time to quit harping over the past history of great-ancestors and take responsibility for the present. We are providing a crutch and excuse.

Do we really need a day for each racial grouping?
Why can't we all just be 'children of the earth'?
