Yes thats the only way to pull up a glued carpet with alot of force.someone sure messed up when they glued down a carpet.no need to glue one down.it's a real mess because you have to scrape and sand then.a little hint.it the carpet is'nt really tore up. over lay the new carpet on the old one.that way you will have a cushion.unless it stinks then you better remove.good luck.

Did you also want to save the tile? If this is the case, you will need to find out what glue was used and how you can dissolve or loosen it while the carpet is still down. Once it is loosened, it's just a case of putting your back into it and pulling the carpet up. Remember to provide lots of ventilation (all window open and a fan blowing or sucking the air out the windows) while you are dissolving the glue. Even if the fumes aren't toxic they will make you sick. Check with a carpeting company about the glue and if you have respiratory problems, wear a dust mask while applying the solvent and pulling up the carpet. You will need to do a clean up on the tiles to remove any glue remnants left behind.

If the tile is not wanted then just start pulling. Once you get a corner up you can use a scraper to get under the tile so that it comes up with the carpet. Even more hard work.

Have fun and hope it's cool while you do this.

Steam is the best way. There are a number of ways to bring steam into the home with a steam wand that can direct the steam to beneath the carpet as you pull it up.

With great difficulty. If you have a Home Depot or other tool rental service in your area, you may be able to rent a power tool that does the job.
