The Michigan House has approved a bill that would let residents be notified by Email when a sex offender moves into their zip code.

People could sign up for a free Email notification service aimed at providing the most up-to-date information about potentially dangerous sex offenders moving into their neighborhoods.

The bill heads back to the Senate and could be on Governor Granholm's desk soon.

Supporters say the Email system would let people get important information without regularly having to the visit the state's sex offender Web site or check with law enforcement.

Didn't a federal Judge block that bill from becoming law?

I hope I'm wrong as people that harm children should be removed from society, in my opinion.

I believe that everyone should be notified in any way possible. The sad and frightening thing is that we would probably be getting notifications on a daily basis. I live in a rural town in the Northeast United States and there are eight offenders within less than ten miles of my home. These are "known" offenders, this does not include those that have not been caught, and may be on the Internet using alias names and identities.....

In the larger towns near me, within a 30 mile radius, this number increases into the dozens. Many towns are trying to pass ordinances and bills into law governing how close these offenders can reside with regard to schools, parks, churches and day-cares. It is frightening, and we all have to be diligent and teach our children and grandchildren and therefore, all children about "Stranger Danger."

We have mail notification here, and the police also go door to door as much as is possible; so that we are all aware of what is going on. The more that we know, the more aware we can be. This is a good thing.

OK, if I'm reading this right...now they want our email addresses, too?

If they feel it's that important to spend the money on mailings, too, we must have a high average of repeat offenders in Michigan.

Is notifying people going to stop the repeat offenders or should the money be spent on rehabilitation, for starters. Let's think this out...

The Omaha sheriff's office probably has them listed on their website. Otherwise, the state of Nebraska Sex Offender Registry will have the info. You can enter your specific address or just your zip code and get a listing of the CONVICTED sex offenders. Just don't let this give you a false sense because not all have been caught or convicted since the registry went into effect.

I think it is a great thing. Where I live they do notify people that live within a certain area of the sex offender by mail.

Sounds like a good idea in Ohio they send a little postcard type thing in the mail. You can go to the local sheriffs office website and search through all sex offenders in the county.

The only problem is that the agency would ahve to have peoples e-mail before they were able to notify anyone. Snail mail is still the best way...especially sine not everyone HAS e-mail...i didn't until a coulpe of months ago.
