First I would vacuum thoroughly, both sides and around all the edges. Then put the mattress outside in the sun for several hours, turning it at least one time. Before putting it back on your box spring or frame, vacuum that area then sprinkle it with baking soda. Spray your mattress with frebreeze or some animal odor controller while outside so it can dry before placing it on your box spring or frame. This should take care of your odor. You can do the same processes without putting the mattress outside but it may not be quite as effective.

Sprinkle liberally with baking soda and let it sit for a day or two. Then vacuum it and spray Febreeze or Lysol and let it air out outside. Then get a hypo-allergenic matress cover that zips over the whole mattress and that should keep the mustiness at bay.
