Demat account, short term for dematerialised account is a type of banking account which dematerialize the paper-based physical shares.
The idea of dematerialised account is to avoid the need to hold physical shares--the shares are virtually being bought and sold through the banking account.
This account is popular in India and also the SEBI mandates demat account for share trading above 500 shares.
All shares, debentures, bonds are traded in DEMAT format only and one has to have a account with a Depositary participant who deals with this paperless shares-.

Opening a DMAT account
From: R.Venkatesh, Singapore
Subject: Opening a DMAT account
Dear Sir/Madam
I am trying to establish a DMAT account, but looks like it is difficult task sitting in Singapore.
Indian Banks that are situated in foreign countries should be allowed to open DMAT accounts. If we make the DMAT system customer oriented, there can be more investment from NRIs flowing into India.
I hope to get a reply from the SEBI/DMAT authorities.

You had share and securities certificate in paper form earlier ( You can still choose to have them) but now you can De-materialize them that is to say get them deposited into the D-mat account with a bank, after converting them in D-mat form (You need to submit the paper form back to the company with the D-mat request form).
Once you get the Shares into dmat account you can sell them much more easily as now you don't need to give delivery of paper shares which would have to be sent to the company for change of ownership, but now you give a Delivery slip (DIS), its like a cheque. The shares are immediately debited to your account and credited to the buyers account. So a Dmat account keeps your shares in paperless form instead of money like a ordinary bank account.
Now you understand the concept you can very well visualize that it is necessary only for investment in stock market, not for other kind of investments like bank investments, fixed deposits, property etc.
