The bank is liable but they should pay any fees or excess interest if the payment to the credit card was late. When you get the next credit card statement take it to the bank and they should pay up as a goodwill gesture.

I think you should offer to compare your records with theirs. If they make an error in your favour - and admit it - then it is their business to correct it.
Just be sure that it WAS your bank that called. They should NOT have asked you to reveal your PIN number or any complete information - only parts of it. If they did not address you by name or asked for more than your date of birth, PART of your address or PART of your security code, then always ask if you may call them back and call the number that you know for your bank.
I should say that, in most cases, debits on a credit card are done automatically and I would be suspicious if they said that a cashier was involved.

I hope that you did not give any financial information out over the phone. This could be a scam where crooks are looking for your financial info. If you did give any info out, call your bank immediately to check if they called you (about 1 chance in a trillion) and if not have your accts frozen so no one can get $$ out. Then call your credit card company and have your credit card flagged. If your bank did call you, take your receipts to your bank, and help them straighten this mess out.

This sounds odd to me. If the bank forgot to debit your account, why would they call you? They should just do what they forgot to do and go on. By asking them to pay your credit card, you promised to pay them, and authorized the debit. Unless a VERY long time has passed, that promise is still binding.
I don't know why your bank would have even called you.

if they are wanting you to contact the credit card company contact them it may be they can't contact the credit card company on your behalf - go into your bank branch and talk to the manager and make any calls to the credit card company on thier phone so the manager is present to assist and apologise to you and the credit card company, if any fees are involved to you as a result then bill the bank for them as they would certainly bill you if the situation was reversed and it was your error, if it is just a matter of the credit card company asking for payment again you will be ok, if you need to take the bank to court for negligence and stick in that you have suffered as a result of thier negligence (a threat/promise to go to the papers on top and change banks is also useful)

They should pay the bill, as you originally intended
They can only pay this from funds available in your account, now.
They are not liable to make up any definciencies to pay the bill, if you have spent the money in the meantime.
If you spent funds becasue they had not paid your bill ,and you thought you had extra money in your account, then this would be classed as *your mistake*
They SHOULD be liable for any 'late fees' you may be charged for missing your payment.
Explain this in a letter and send it to customer services at your bank
