A 'person' is identical to another 'person' if both consciousnesses encode the same information and follow the same process of consciousness, with the same sensory input.

Imagine instead of changing hair colour, the genetic change is a single nucleotide on a part of your DNA that has no effect on the functioning of your brain (literally no effect), then you as a person would theoretically develop exactly the same information in your brain, and your brain would function exactly the same, and your senses would be exactly the same, so you would be identical people.

Interestingly, if you were a geneticist and examined the sequence of your own DNA, and looked at the nucleotide that is different (say G vs. T), then at that instant, your mind would no longer be identical to your 'other self's' mind, although they would be very very similar. And again, continuity has nothing to do with it.

've also heard this 'Doppleganger theory'. I don't think that it it likely for the following reason: It is assumed that if we take a given individual and contrast that with the number of people on the planet that statistically speaking there should be a person who looks the same. However, this theory says a bit more than that- it says that every individual has a twin. So if you thought that a single person having a twin was unlikely, then just imagine the probablity that everyone has a twin.

In any case so what if we have a twin? I'm not sure that it would make any real difference to our lives. Moreover, if by twin we mean someone who looks like you then how precise does that similarity need to be? After all, they may have the same facial features as me, but they might have a different skin-colour, or maybe they have one leg shorter than the other.
