to potman the top 2 spots get a second shot and 2 home finals 3 and 4 get the 2nd shot and a home final which is advantageous the top 4 all have a relatively good chance of winning with out a predertermined winner

i would say the afl system as it is fairer on all teams that are skilled enough to reach the top 8 and the nrl need to take a leaf out of the afl finals book

People seem to forget that about 10 years ago AFL used the same system the NRL uses now. Frankly, I think having 8 teams making the finals in a 16 team comp rewards mediocrity anyway.

Both codes argues their system rewards the top teams. Personally, I prefer the current NRL system. It's very simlar to seeding systems other sports (such as tennis) use - the top seeds play the lowest, theoretically giving them an easier game.
AFL "rewards" the top teams by making them play the other top teams, while the lower teams are given a fighting chance only having to play similar strength teams.

I like the afl system better, we used to have the NRL system. The top 4 usually have the advantage either way.
