I've been checked twice - once at university, once when living in a shared house. Luckily I've always had a license so wasn't fined.

I'd say buy a licence but if money is tight, buy a black & white licence (approx. £40). If they check, just say you've recently upgraded to colour and a cheque is in the post.

I don't have a t.v licence and I have never been caught. BUT I only get the chance to watch an hour or so of television late at night. Good luck . You will get away with it for a long time IF you only watch a little bit of t.v is what I am saying. They will know the best times to catch people watching without a licence as they are not stupid i.e when the soaps like coronation street/Eastenders/emmerdale is on. During the day if you watch without a licence you are upping your odds of getting caught as well. Don't let the bas@ards catch you. P.S you DO NOT have to let an inspector in to your home to check for a television. Take no notice of anyone who says otherwise.

the possibility is very severe - as many people have suggested. So the stable suggestion is to pay for it asap. yet to make the bitter pill sweeter ask her to evaluate this: BBC is between the ultimate broadcasting companies interior the international. I often hate severe taxes and being ripped off at each turn, yet right here you extremely get make a contribution to a minimum of a few thing very worthwile. BBC makes a number of the ultimate technological information, academic, information and nature programmes interior the international. the adult males are at situations no longer afraid to stand up even to the goverment (look at Fox information for assessment). And there are their academic initiatives, the Proms song pageant, varied international classification orchestras. that's what the licence in this usa will pay. I study it to my interior reach usa, the place I additionally had to pay television licence, yet replaced into getting no broadcast after lifeless night and then teleshopping for the time of morning and early afternoon. with out the decrease back up from licencing the BBC could be much less possibly to push for technological advances in technologies like digital television i HDTV. BTW - I have not have been given any very own company activity or involment in BBC whatsover.

100%. The pooter doesn't lie.

You are however asking the wrong question. You will receive a notice stating that they know you haven't got a licence (what they don't know is whether you have a telly (or a mobile that plays telly) - this letter will be from aan enforcement bod.

You will eventually get a visit. The detector person will ask to come in to see whether you have a TV.

This all works on self incrimination. If you don't let him in, and don't admit that you have a TV, or a mobile able to receive progs, then there is nothing they can do. He is legally allowed to enter the proeprty to see if you have a TV.

The local TV licence inspectors visit every household where there isn't a licence. They do this systematically and are highly motivated. Sooner or later they'll get you. Then you'll be clobbered for damages representing the period for which you didn't have a licence and for costs.

If you hire a TV the hire company will notify the authorities of the fact.

Quite high. They have records on computer. My mum had a house fire 2 years ago and since she wasn't living at the house after the fire, didn't renew her TV licence. Within three weeks a bloke was knocking at the door asking why she had got no licence. Luckily they saw the house was not being lived in so let her off with the fine but if you have a tele and no licence (and your house still is livable) then you should get one. Its not worth the risk.

Just pay it. It isn't that much. Yes, I know I'm in America. But I was a student in the UK and I paid my TV licence. Remember: Student = Poor Not all Americans are Donald Trump.

I haven't had a TV license for 3yrs now. We get the odd threatening letter and have had them knock at our door. But we just didn't answer and sat there on our arses watching TV. If you did answer the door and it was the TV people just pretend to be foreign. I do a great impression of a Polish girl...!

I conclude - don't answer the door unless you know who it is!
