If this is possible, what kind of external sensors would be needed? Is there a card module or something?

Yes you can you can either get a bluetooth GPS (Tomtom make one) and a bluetooth dongle for your laptop and of course the necessary software or you can use a standard walking GPS unit that can be connected to a computer (you may need a parallel to USB adaptor too) and again the relevant software. I have had the yellow handheld Garmin attached to my laptop and used Autoroute to see current location, it didn't give directions though.
