I am thinking of buying my first home within London zones 1-6, as i can't afford much i suspect the property i buy will be in poor condition and somebody told me that if you buy a property that has been empty for a year or more you can get a government grant to renovate it, I was wondering what other grants may also be available to me?

The only way you can get a grant is from the council. They will conduct a survey of your home and see how much work needs done. Depending on the quality of living you have got in the house, depends how much the council will give you.

My friends parents bought a house and got around £5000 to do the house up but then found other problems with the building and reapplied for some more money to cover theses extra costs. Alot of the money was given to them for structural factors of the building though, not a new kitchen for instance.

hope this helps abit

Of course this might be different in the UK, but in the US a mortgage broker would likely be able to tell you about grant opportunities. There may even be local grants depending on the area you purchase in (revitalization type grants).

of course NO mortgage company is going to lend you the money to buy this run down house until the repairs necessary have been made, which puts you in a catch 22 situation.

Maybe you should try the Department of the Environment, or your local council, to see what help, if any, is available.
