Cancer of the cervix is no longer a possibility. Pap smears can tell you about your hormone status and infections. They certainly are not a routine necessity.

Hi it depends on why you had to have a hysterectomy, and the type of hysterectomy. Information I have found said that if cancer or abnormal cells have been found then, you must have regular test.

The Jean Hailes org Say's
"Women who have had a hysterectomy may need a Pap test taken from the top of the vagina (vaginal vault smear). This will depend on the reason for the hysterectomy and the past screening history of the woman.

- If a woman has had a hysterectomy for benign conditions such as fibroids, excessive bleeding, endometriosis etc, and there is no history of an abnormal Pap test in the past, she will not require vaginal vault Pap tests.

- If a woman is unsure of the reason for hysterectomy and/or is unsure of the results of previous Pap tests, she should undergo a vaginal vault smear. An attempt should also be made where possible to find out her previous history. If the vaginal vault smear is normal, she will not require any further smear tests.

- Women who have a sub-total hysterectomy (cervix is left behind) will need to continue having a Pap test every 2 years.

- Women with a past history of CIN in whom the excision margin (suture line) after hysterectomy was involved or not adequately assessed, will need long term follow-up with their treating gynaecologist and regular vaginal vault smears as determined by their specialist.

- Women who have had a high grade lesion completely excised will need yearly vaginal vault smears for the first 5 years and then revert to 2 yearly screening of the vaginal vault thereafter.

- All hysterectomised women who have intact ovaries still need regular vaginal examinations to check their ovaries, even if they do not need Pap tests."

Please ask your regular doctor and I hope this info helps a little.

It is going decrease than a diverse call i've got confidence, with the aid of fact it purely comprises the cervix; yet is rather needed. i myself had a hyster in 1997, and nevertheless have ordinary 2 year smear assessments.

I still get them even though I don't have a cervix (so no chance of cervical cancer). They're painless and insurance covers them and they will detect vaginal cancers so I just do it every year as part of my Gyn checkup.
