Down's Syndrome is also known as Trisomy 21. Normally we carry 2 copies of 23 different chromosomes, but with trisomy 21 the person has 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. It is purely a genetic anomaly.
Drinking alcohol can cause cognitive defects, behavioral defects, and physical birth defects.
Fetal alcohol syndrome and Fetal alcohol effects are completely preventable simply by abstaining from alcohol where as trisomy 21 is not preventable.

Smoking and particularly drinking can harm the baby in many ways, physically and mentally---but as others have told you, smoking and drinking do NOT cause Downs Syndrome. If you do a bit of research on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, you will see that it's also very bad, and nothing anyone would want to inflict on a developing baby. I say "inflict" because, unlike Downs Syndrome, alcohol consumption is entirely preventable and entirely under the control of the mother.

No, downs is a genetic thing but your baby could be born with fetal alcohol syndrome and will go through DT's after birth if you drink a lot of alcohol. Drinking is not a good idea while pregnant.

Down syndrome is caused by three types of abnormal cell division involving the 21st chromosome. Therefore, the basic cause of Down syndrome is genetic.
However, drinking alcohol during your pregnancy can cause other mental retardations and physical abnormalities in the baby. When you are pregnant, everything that you eat or drink affects your baby since it receives its nutrients from you. If you drink alcohol, it can stunt your baby's growth causing a low birth weight. Your baby may also have physical and behavioral problems that can last for the rest of his or her life.

Down Syndrome is a defect in the 21st chromosome but it's not usually genetic unless both parents are carriers for it but don't actually have it. Drinking alcohol causes fetal alcohol syndrome. That is worse.

Nothing can cause down syndrome aside from the genetics. Down syndrome is an extra chromosome and alcohol certainly can't mess up DNA!

DS is genetic, alcohol consumption during pregnancy causes other problem.
Did you know that in a study babies still in the womb act more distressed to the mother drinking a galss of wine (or other alcoholic drink) than anything else... including smoking! Just a pretty useless fact for you all :-)

Not sure about alcohol damage, but not all cases of Down's is genetic. My Aunt and Uncle's second child was a Down's baby. She passed away and years later they decided to have a child and went thru genetic consueling and found it was not genetic.
