It all depends from which country your trip originates. Do NOT however just arrive without a visa, if a visa is required and you do not have one; YOU WILL BE SENT BACK. The firts link hereunder is a list of countries who are EXEMPT from having a visa.
If you need a visa visit the South African Embassy in your country.

You will be issued with a 3 month holiday visa when you land in SA. You fill in a form on the plane and hand it in when you get to passport control. I am from the UK and i am talking from experience.

They won't even know that you are here, so just come with your passport! If they refuse to let you in to the country just tell them some soppy story, they believe anything at OR TAMBO airport (Previously known as JHB international)!
