Well I have to say neither since octopus is a salt water creature and piranhas are fresh I guess they would both lose sorry for the smart *** part, but I think a octopus would put up a pretty good fight

if you put the pirhana in a saltwater tank it would instantly go into shock and shortly therafter die- making an easy meal for the octopus- however if you put the octopus in the freshwater tank-the pirhana would possibly have a chance- if the writhing of the panicked suffering octopus didn't send it immediately into hiding-which is probably what would happen because pirhana are actually pretty timid fish-especially when kept alone.

I think it would be close - but I'm going to say octopus if we're talking one-on-one. Against a crowd of piranhas the poor octopus would be screwed.
I think an octopus would win because they are smart and they've got 8 legs which means they could probably lose a couple and keep going. Also, they're able to squeeze into small places, so he would be able to retreat somewhere out of danger for a rest and to re-think his strategies if things went badly.
Cool question BTW.

Octopus. Although he/she might loose a tentacle in the fight. One pirhana isn't nearly as lethal as a shoal. Anyway, octopus are really intelligent, I doubt the pirhana could match that.

Octopus.

Pirhana attacks, Octopus squirts ink and blinds piranha. Octopus eats blind Pirhana.

Neither.

Freshwater (which piranha live in) would kill the octopus, and saltwater (which the octopus lives in) would kill the piranha.

However, against a piranha-like salt water fish then the octopus would win (large octopi can kill and eat some sharks): http://youtube.com/watch?v=cA8zQw6gDNI

Killing and eating a piranha would be easy for a large octopus (it might lose a tentacle or two but those grow back).

Octopus would win. In public aquariums they have been filmed attacking and eatin shark up to 4 feet long. I dont think a pirahna is near the strength of a shark. But they would never meet cause they come from different ecosystems.
