I am looking to create a fishtank, likely an octagon tank, with 4 to 5 veiltail goldfish...

This will be my first 'serious' fishtank... what all will I need, and how big of a tank will I be needing?

I have read that you have to be very carefull with tank 'decor' because of how fragile their fins can be...

Any help would be great, will I need some other type of fish in there as well to help keep the tank clean?

Or will just the 5 veiltail goldfish be enough?

I am kinda clueless here and any help would be great... thanks.

veiltail goldfish should not be kept in a tank deeper than 12 inches
when you have that much finnage it tires the fish quickly also
do not use a power filter that hangs on the outside of the tank
as it will create too much current for the fish, instead use undergravel or corner box filters, get a good book BEFORE
you purchase the fish so that you can care for them properly

The veiltail goldfish, Carassius auratus, is an interesting development of the fantail. It has the body shape of a fantail but has extremely long fins, that are very attractive. Like all fancy goldfish should not be kept in ponds, and keeping them with other fish can be complicated by aggressive fish damaging the fins. They will not tolerate temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Care must be taken with aquarium decor as the fins of this fish are very long and may get trapped under rocks or ornaments. Plastic plants can also cause problems for the Veiltail, and the similar Fantail (goldfish). They are not excellent swimmers but can be kept with all other fancy varieties of goldfish, as they are still quite hardy. They come in many different colors, including orange, black, chocolate and calico.

Veiltails can grow to 6 - 7 inches in length. Although hardy, they are not suited to beginners, and are better kept by more experienced aquarists in dedicated aquariums that can best cater to their specific needs.

If you can find the veiltail goldfish and not spend a fortune for them then it would be an amazing tank. Here is a link to a forum with some info and other links about them, http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=53189
If you look around the site I'm sure you can find out even more about the veiltail and if there is anything else you would like to know I'm sure the people over there would be glad to help. There is even a DIY forum over there if you need help with the tank itself.

Octagonal tanks are great to look at but can be difficult to keep clean...also I have heard that depending on the size of the tank you may have trouble with the water depth...I'm not sure if goldfish will tend to stay mainly near the top of the tank or not...you should research this though...you don't want a tall tank with all the action at the top or bottom.
