Boy that is a real hard question. First of all the French won by leaving and we relieved them of the fate that our men faced, (death). Vietnam the pearl of the orient at one time was devastated so bad they had no plant growths for years because of the bombings. The Chinese won that war, they were mostly the beneficiaries of that land anyway, and they showed us that in many numbers when they slaughtered us in battle to the point of hand to hand we were outnumbered 1000 to one or more. They just kept coming. Just picture one billion people against 300 million. China is an enormous strength in number and is a force to reckon with that is why we bombed them so heavily with Napom bombs. Economically we and many profiteers won with their investments in the oil industry. Just like today but then instead of raising prices they had gas rationing and we could not get gas to drive to work sometimes and Vietnam is not to this day called a war it was a conflict. If you look up the meaning of War it is, "any armed conflict" So it was a war and we are still in denial and we lost terribly many good people for nothing. For today they are communist, and yet we can travel there freely and there people can come here and Saigon has been rehabilhitated greatly on our blood sweat and tear. They won. All we did is make people richer that were already rich and powerful and make other people die for that.

The Genaral staff and the politicians who started the war...it was initially thought that we entered the Southeast Asian theater to combat Communism, but it was later found to be based upon the trans-shipment and proliferation of the drug trade in the Golden Triangle. Read the books written about the Iran-Contra scandal and another by Daniel Hopsicker called "Barry and the Boys"...it's a very scary, but clear indication that we Americans have little control and less knowledge of the intentions of the people we place in public office!
