Some people find it helpful to have a firmer mattress (to avoid a saggy bit in the middle) - but if you have pain and stiffness first thing in the morning, it is likely to be degenerative disease or arthritis. You need to exercise your back regularly and gently. Walking and simple yoga are good. (From: Nurse 'Creamcheese')

It possibly would but a firm mattress may do the trick; possibly cheaper. Also, try putting a small pillow under your knees when you are sleeping on your back and between your knees if you are on your side, in somewhat of a fetal position. Don't sleep on your stomach at all and not flat on your back either. Maybe try increasing the height of your pillow so as to take the pressure off your back some. Be sure to change positions during the night, too. I hope these tips help. They have worked for me. Good luck...

It might help you but the cause should be confirmed. Are you on prolonged standing or sitting in your work? Anything in excess can cause back pain! Are you overweight or obese? If so, then better loose weight. Or is there any trauma to your back? Usually pain relievers will work, however, if you had been taking it for sometime, consultation to the doctor should be done. An x-ray or MRI might be requested depending on the history & physical examination findings. Other cases are just responsive to phycial therapy but you should be seen first by the physiatrist or the rehab doctor. She will evaluate you & refer you later to the physical therapist.

A good firm mattress and a "body pillow" (about $15) to support my left leg makes all the difference to me. I slip it under my knee and get comortable. That takes the strain off my back.

It probably would. We spend a third of our life in bed but many of us buy cheap mattresses. Getting a decent one should help with the back pain.

As a matter of interest, do you sleep on your stomach? I went to an osteopath for a year and that was the cause of my problem.

It sure helped me. But see a doctor. It could be a medical condition that may require treatment.
